Rambling - May 2010 Report

May 9th. Overcast skies and a cold, northerly wind. Not ideal rambling weather but 13 hardy souls appeared at the appointed hour and we set out for an almost due south destination, Churn Farm.

The route commences on School Path followed quickly by a left turn at Shovel Spring and then on to Upton. We followed Stream Road through Upton to reach the Reading Road and then headed up the hill on the road that passes The Saltbox and eventually becomes Boham's Road. In spite of the overcast weather, there were some very fine views to the east and north.

Boham's Road eventually leads to a turning on the left and a short way down this turning brought us to Churn Farm. At the farm we turned north-east and followed the long, straight footpath along the flank of Churn Hill. Those who have done this walk before will remember countless pigs and piglets at this farm - some within their pens and quite a few without, exploring their brave, new world. Alas, today, there is only wheat.

Towards Blewbury we had our best view to the north as we reached the disused quarry with its many bike trails and two comfortable benches at the very top. We descended into Blewbury arriving at Westbrook Street and from there it's a straight shot north back to East Hagbourne, the causeway, and Main Road. A left turn on Main Road brought us back to Upper Cross

All of that was 7-miles in just 2½-hours - a very pleasant Sunday excursion. Won't you join us next month?
