Rambling - October 2009 Report

October 11th. The day was forecast to be cloudy, but at the appointed hour there was a lengthy shower and no hint of a break as we faced a steady fall. There were only six brave enough (foolish enough?) to venture forth. However, it was a very strong six and our destination was 'far' to the south - we set off at a good pace.

Our track was west along School Path to the embankment (bike path); along the embankment to Upton; then the informal path directly to the Upton Village Hall; across The Reading Road at The George & Dragon and finally due south passing Upton Lodge and gaining the high ground near 'New Buildings'. As we emerged from this climb on a path much-shaded by trees, we realized that the shower was coming to an end. Much nicer walking in the dry!

We continued south, joined Boham's Road (a farm road with little traffic), eventually passed Churn Farm and turned south-east on the track that leads to Lower Chance Farm. This farm, little more than a single, small structure, is about as far south as we can get from Upper Cross and still make it back in a ramble that is under 9-miles. The day continued to brighten and we spotted many deer in the distance.

We turned to the north on a footpath which took us directly to Upper Chance Farm and to a familiar gallop near Churn Hill. By this time the sun was shining and we were treated to stunning views (the JR was clearly visible) and marvelled at the clarity of the freshly-washed scene spread out before us.

The descent into Blewbury was rapid (and not too slippery) and we made our way home (due north) via the BSW and the causeway to reach Main Road and then west to Upper Cross. This added up to 8¼-miles which we walked in just three hours.

Please join us for the November ramble - always special for Remembrance Day.
