Rambling - March 2009 Report

Sunday 8th March, started with a breezy but sunny morning, however by the time of the walk it was raining very heavy. Still, 7 hardy walkers assembled at Upper Cross for the walk. We set off towards the church, turning left onto the path that runs South to Moor Lane, by the time we got there it had stopped raining. We turned left along Moor Lane and then right onto the path that runs past the site of the old Blewbury sewage works and into Blewbury.

In Blewbury we turned right along Westbrook Street, and taking our second footpath to our right, we came out onto the A417. We crossed the road and followed the path up the hill past "New Buildings" crossing the path to Saltbox, we continuing West to the road that leads to Alden Farm. Here we turned left, following the road for a short distance then turned right following the hedge line North Westerly until we came to the edge of the field. Here we turned left and followed the path until we came across a small stile in the hedge where we turned right and followed the path down the hill to the Lynch Way. It was while crossing this open high ground that it started to rain and sleet and our faces stung with it driving at us.

On reaching the Lynch Way we turned right and headed back to Upton. Here we crossed the A417 again and went along Prospect Road, turning right into Station Road and then along Fieldside. We turned left and took the path that leads to the dismantled Railway line, and turning right we walked along the embankment towards East Hagbourne. We got off the embankment and took the path that follows Shovel Brook, back through the Church yard and back to Upper Cross.

Just under 6½ miles in just over 2½ hours.
