Rambling - August 2008 Report

The forecast for 10 August was scattered showers and they were right! We had one as we started out, another in the middle and a real drencher as we finished. There were 19 of us and all enjoyed this slightly different village ramble; it was more of a peregrination.

I shall not relate every twist and turn – there were many. Suffice-it-to-say that we were never more than one-mile from Upper Cross (OK quibblers: 5,600feet!); that we never walked the same segment twice; that we covered a bit more than five miles; and we saw lots of interesting things.

Many had never walked the footpath that goes north from Cherry Brook Farm and turns west to meet Hagbourne Road. Some had never walked the Linear Park (we get lots of visiting ramblers). The Millennium Wood in full leaf was a special treat and we stood within the stone circle and admired how handsome it would be for a dramatic summertime production. Mowbray Field was our next destination as it skirts the southern edge of Didcot. A brief excursion on Portway Road brought us to the footpath to West Hagbourne, and finally our familiar School Path led us back to East Hagbourne and Upper Cross.

A little over five miles in two hours. Wet but fun. Don’t miss the September walk from the usual starting point with a guest leader.
