Rambling - March 2006 Report

At last! A ramble on a dry day. Not terribly warm on 12 March, but at least nothing was falling out of the sky. Twenty of us set out, warned about the mud, to see how much running water we could find: Mill Brook in East Hagbourne and the Cleve in Blewbury.

We started on Church Lane and turned left on Fieldside and turned left again on the very short footpath just before reaching Blewbury Road at Tadley. We crossed the road and continued east and the a bit south to reach Mill Brook at the site of the old paper mill. Not much water at this point. After crossing the brook we turned right and stayed close to the brook following the footpath as it crosses the Blewbury Road. We continued heading south on that famous stretch known as 'the bramble' and passed behind the horse centre and on into Blewbury.

There is a footpath on the east side of Blewbury that runs all the way across the village from its northern edge to the Reading Road. We seldom use it but did today because the junction at the Reading Road is close to another footpath that leads to the Cleve. This latter path heads north-west and takes one directly there. Again, little water. A great disappointment and a clear indication of why we now have a hosepipe ban!

After the Cleve we continued west to strike Westbrook Street and then north to the familiar BSW (site of) and thence to home finishing up on Parsonage Way and our own Main Road. It was actually a pleasant walk (once we had the wind behind us…) with very little mud. It took just over 2-hours to go about 5½-miles and felt mighty good on a wintry day.

Spring is coming (so they tell me); the clocks will go forward on March 26th; that means that we will switch to our summer starting time of 2:00 pm. See you then!
