Rambling - February 2006 Report Rain. That was the theme for our 12 February ramble with rain as we started; rain as we walked; and rain as we finished. Actually, it wasn’t a lot of rain, but the addition of winds gusting to 15 made it seem unnecessarily damp! In any event, nine brave souls set out to enjoy another winter ramble. Our destination was Chilton, hopefully without too much mud! We walked to West Hagbourne using School Path and turned south for the George & Dragon, skirting the centre of Upton by using an unauthorized path that runs parallel to the Dismantled Railway and through the Upton playing field to the Upton Village Hall. From the pub, there is a beautifully maintained footpath that continues to parallel the Dismantled Railway. “Beautifully maintained” that is until the footpath crosses the railway. At this point the footpath enters a five-foot deep ditch which is now choked with brush cuttings which make it totally impassable. (A note to the Highway Department will be sent.) We skirted this obstacle and made our way into Chilton. There are some lovely spring flowers just as one enters Chilton by this route and we stopped (in the rain…) to enjoy this early reminder that spring will come! We turned left to walk almost due east away from Chilton and on to the Lynch Way, a wide and often sloppy track that led us back to Upton. We walked through the centre of Upton to the Chapel Furlong and then onto the Dismantled Railway. From there we traveled along the embankment to descend once more at School Path and then to home. Our trusty back-marker was carrying a GPS which indicated that we walked 5½-miles (the map says 6…) in just under 2½-hours. Do join us for our next ramble on 12 March when there are bound to be more signs of spring. NEXT RAMBLE |
