The New Year’s Day Ramble 2006 January 1st. Dry and even a little sunny. Just what we all needed to shake off those New Years Eve excesses. We started from Upper Cross with about 30 walkers and by the time we reached the dismantled railway – via School Path – our numbers were up to 40! We continued along the line of the old railway until we reached the Millennium Woods where we paused to enjoy the stone circle and admire the excellent growth of the young trees. We completed our circular walk by heading towards Shortlands Farm and then briefly east on the muddy bridleway to pick up the footpath that cuts back south-west to join the Blewbury Road at White’s Corner. A little way along we turned right on possibly the shortest path in East Hagbourne which emerges onto Fieldside. Right on Fieldside, right again on Parsonage Lane and finally turned left on Main Road, and headed for Upper Cross. Although at our peak we had 40 walkers, only about 20 remained to touch the cross at the end. That’s OK because everyone seemed to have a good time and that’s what it’s all about. There was a photograph as we started and I believe that it’s posted on the East Hagbourne web site. See you next year – or possibly on one of our monthly rambles: Second Sunday of the month, 1:30 in the afternoon, always meeting at Upper Cross. |
