Rambling - November 2005 Report Remembrance Sunday, November 13th. Sixteen of us (almost half from East Hagbourne) set off for our traditional November ramble in cool, dry weather under cloudy skies. Our destination was the war graves in the Harwell cemetery and our route was familiar. We walked School Path to Shovel Spring where we turned left on the footpath to Upton. In Upton we turned right and made our way to the A417 which we crossed and continued to Hagbourne Hill via the Chilton Road. The views to the north were excellent. The Chilton Road follows the line of the ancient Icknield Way and continues as a public path most of the way to Wantage. We went only as far as the north-south public path between Chilton and Harwell and turned north to walk into Harwell. Once in Harwell we followed local roads to the cemetery. The WWII graves are set off by themselves and they are beautifully maintained. We also noticed – some of us for the first time – that there are other war graves scattered throughout the cemetery: mostly graves from WWI. We stopped for a few moments to pay our respects and then moved on using the northern gate out of the cemetery. Local footpaths lead to the Didcot Road (B4493) and we walked beside it briefly to pick up The Driftway, a track that once crossed a much smaller A34 that was (unfortunately) severed years ago when the A34 became 4-lane. The Driftway leads all the way into West Hagbourne where we again used local roads to reach the beginning of School Path. From there, it was straight back to Upper Cross. Exactly 7 miles in just under 2½ hours. It was a pleasure to have so many local villagers on the ramble. Next month we continue with our winter starting time of 1:30. The December walk is always a good way to get ready for the Christmas festivities. Hope you can join us.
