Rambling - October 2005 Report October 9th. Unbelievable weather for October – sunny, mild and welcoming. Nineteen ramblers set out for a very local walk that still covered more than 6 miles. We began by walking up Harwood Road and turning left on Lake Road in order to reach the path that runs beside Mowbray Field and out to Park Road, in Didcot. Once on Park Road we headed into town, finally turning left at Colbourne Road and then right on Drave Avenue which brought us to the long footpath that runs from Wantage Road all the way to West Hagbourne. We went south and followed this partly urban, partly rural path all the way into West Hagbourne. Turning to the east, we entered Moor Lane, the old track that once connected West Hagbourne directly with Hagbourne Mill. It was surprisingly dry and passable (for a change!) We took our leave from Moor Lane on the north/south footpath that runs from Blewbury to Fieldside. We headed north, turned briefly east on Fieldside, and again turned north on Grange Path to emerge at Lower Cross. From here we headed to White’s Corner and picked up the diagonal path that runs beside disused dairy barns. This crosses the Fulscot bridle path and continue north to the edge of Didcot and then west to end at New Road. We crossed the road and picked up the old Linear Park (now a bicycle path that is clean, paved and lit) which brought us back to East Hagbourne just at the Millennium Wood. We continued past the (disused) allotments and back to Upper Cross via Wilcher Close and Shoe Lane. As stated earlier, a little over 6 miles in just 2¼ hours. Almost everyone found a bit of path that they had never seen before, but hoped to walk again ! Next month we revert to our winter starting time of 1:30. The November walk always has special significance. Please join us. Next Village Ramble:Sunday, November 13th - 1:30pm - Meet at East Hagbourne Upper Cross Contact John Jones 813326 |
