Rambling - September 2005 Report 11th September. Cloudy. Mild. A hint of rain that never actually happened and 11 ramblers keen to be off. The objective of this walk was to explore our local bike paths. We set out for Upton via Shovel Spring and entered Upton at St. Mary’s church. A brief turn on Upton Roads brought us to Bike Path 44 where it descends to local roads from the disused railway embankment. We walked the embankment to the Didcot end of East Hagbourne and continued to follow 44 as it swings past the Millennium Wood. We stopped briefly to admire the excellent progress of the trees planted in the Wood a mere five years ago. The bike path runs beside the school playing fields and then down to what used to be know as The Linear Park. This ‘park’ has been cleaned up and paved in recent years and looks much more inviting than in its previous incarnation. The path emerges at Bridge Close in Didcot where we cross Hagbourne Road to continue through the Fleet Meadow estate and finally emerge at the large, new roundabout where lights make crossing the road a simple matter. At this point we have left the 44 bike path but immediately pick up another (without number) that runs beside the tracks to the South Moreton road. Another quarter-mile on the South Moreton road brought us to the bridle path at Fulscot Farm which we followed back to East Hagbourne. As we entered the parish we turned half-left on the path that leads to Blewbury Road, intersecting at White’s Corner. Another left on the Blewbury Road allowed us to reach the shortest footpath in East Hagbourne which we took to access Fieldside. Fieldside leads to Church Lane and Church Lane leads to Church Close which of course brought us back to Upper Cross. Someone’s GPS says we did 6½ miles and I know it took 2¼-hours - a pleasantly brisk walk and home in the dry! Hope you will join us next month.
