Rambling - August 2005 Report

August 14th. A bright day with a strong breeze. Seven walkers set off from Upper Cross, we went up Main Road and turned right along Parsonage Lane, coming out into Fieldside. We continued south on the path that passes the site of the old Blewbury sewage works, eventually arriving in Blewbury.

Here we turned right, along Westbrook Street and up to the A417. After crossing the road, we followed the footpath that goes South West below Churn Hill, passing Churn Knob and Rose Cottage. When we arrived at Churn Farm we turned right and joined Boham’s Road. At this point democracy crept in, and the group had the choice of turning right and heading back via Upton, or turning left and continuing around the other side of Churn Hill. The later option was chosen!

So, we turned left along Boham’s Road continuing until we almost got to the disused railway bridge, and then turned left along the track that leads to Lower Chance Farm. Just before the disused buildings we turned left and took the path up the hill, passing the wood on our right hand side heading towards Upper Chance Farm. At the top of the hill we turned left and took the path back into Blewbury.

We crossed the A417 again, and went down Nottingham Fee, turned right by the Red Lion pub, then left again bringing us out into Church Road. Here we turned right, then left into South Street, continuing along to Ladycroft Park caravan site. We then headed north along the path the runs along side the Caravan site, past the rear of the Equestrian centre, coming out onto the B4016 just before Hagbourne Mill Farm.

We followed the road for a short distance then turned left onto the path opposite Hagbourne Mill farm, coming out on Moor Lane. Here we turned left and followed Moor Lane for a short distance, turning right onto the path that brought us back to the junction of Parsonage Lane and Fieldside. Turning left we followed the path back to Church Close and Upper Cross.

This was quite a long walk by our standards, about 9 miles in just over 3 ¾ hours.

Why not join us for next months, it will be back to about 6 miles!
