Rambling - July 2005 Report

10th July. A warm day with full sun, but only three brave souls. The ranks are usually swelled by people from outside the village but this walk was not publicized so we had to depend on the 'stalwarts' (all of whom have lead the village ramble at one time or another).

We headed down Main Road and turned right on Blewbury Road to reach the footpath that commences at White's Corner. We followed this to join the bridleway connecting Shortlands and Fulscot farms. The bridleway took us to Fulscot and then beside the road leading to South Moreton. We turned north before reaching South Moreton and followed the bridleway that goes to Hadden Hill (over the train line), across the A4130, beside the golf course and on up to the plateau of Down Hill. The intention was to admire the spread of Didcot and then return via Ladygrove Farm and the Linear Park.

However, one of our trio suggested a different plan: Let's try the footpaths that lead on to Long Wittenham. This did not seem a good idea as it would have added three miles to our already very hot walk. "Ah", said the one making the suggestion, "I can get us a ride home." And that's what we did. We followed the north-westerly bridleway for our descent of Down Hill, crossed the road and took the northerly footpath into Long Wittenham, where we found our ride. These were new paths to me and I was glad to see them.

So, a one-way walk of about 5½ miles which took a little less than 2½ hours. In the heat of the day, it was enough. Join us next month when it’s bound to be cooler and enjoy another guest leader.
