Rambling - 2005 Report June 12th. A dry day with a cooling breeze, and a slight threat of rain in the clouds. Twelve walkers set off from Upper Cross, we went down Church Close, turning left into the path just before the Church, then left again along the path that skirts the southern edge of the village, coming out into Fieldside. We crossed the Blewbury road and took the footpath to the right of the old Spread Eagle pub site, following this path we crossed Mill Brook. Here it was pointed out that the brickwork to be seen at the side of the stream was the remains of a paper mill, which in the mid 1800’s was the birthplace of blotting paper, due to an error in the processing of a batch of paper! We continued along this path until it joined with the track from Sheencroft Farm, here we turned left and followed the path until it joined the North – South tree lined path towards Aston Upthorpe. Here we turned right and followed this path past the many paddocks, until it came out into Hagbourne Road. Crossing the road, we then followed the path up onto the hill fort at Blewburton Hill. The clouds were quite high, so we had a good view of the Ridgeway, Boars Hill, and beyond! From here we took the path that goes part Winterbrook Farm and into Blewbury. Crossing the road we walked along Bessels Lea, then took the path that cuts the corner off at South Street coming out into Berry Lane. Then into Church End, turning right taking the path past the old site of the sewage works, crossing Common Lane and eventually coming back into East Hagbourne. We then took Parsonage Lane, turning left into Main Road and back to Upper Cross, still dry! About 6 miles in just over 2 hours.
