Rambling - April 2005 Report

10th April.. A mild and cloudy day, good for walking. Twenty-one walkers set out for our first spring walk.

We left the village on School Path, but soon turned left at Shovel Spring and made our way to Upton where we turned south on Church Street for the short walk to the footpath to Blewbury. The footpath to Blewbury is a treat at this time of year because its is bordered by numerous bushes all suffused with countless white flowers. In Blewbury, we crossed Westbrook Street and continued on to the Red Lion, Nottingham Fee and across the Reading Road to pick up the footpath that rises to the east side of Churn Hill.

We stopped to admire the views east, north and west from atop Churn Hill and walked a little further on, to the first of the gallops, to see the vista to the south. We were treated to the sight of a rook harrying a red kite, high in the air but only about one-hundred yards away. We briefly retraced our steps and turned left on the track that passes to the north of Churn Knob and quickly picked up the footpath that leads back down to Westbrook Street in Blewbury.

We followed Westbrook Street to the track that runs past the old BSW and straight north to its termination at Fieldside. We turned left and walked to Church Lane, turned right to Church Close and right again to finally reached Upper Cross. About 6¾ miles in 2¾ hours. Pleasant and easy walking, much enjoyed.

Please join us in May and note the later start time!
