Rambling - March 2005 Report

13th March.. A cool and cloudy day, but dry. 24 walkers set out to enjoy the various paths between East Hagbourne, Chilton and Harwell.

We left the village on School Path, but soon turned left at Shovel Spring and made our way to Upton after crossing Moor Lane which was surprisingly dry for this time of year. We crossed Upton and continued south-west on the footpath that starts at the George and Dragon. This is one of my favourite footpaths with sheep in fields on our left and the line of the disused railway on our right. (There is much clearance work going on here. Another Sustrans effort?) Our footpath crosses the railway line on a high bridge but was then blocked by further clearance of trees on the route into Chilton. The blockage was avoided by following a field edge. The entrance into Chilton from this direction is a treat with lovely gardens on one side and a sweep of lawns on the other.

We headed due north out of Chilton towards Harwell, passed under the A34 and continued to the track that follows the ancient Icknield Way where we turned right to cross over the A34 and enjoy the views to the north from Hagbourne Hill. Then on to the Chilton Road for about ½-mile and, finally, north out of Upton on the new cycle path that runs along the disused railway. We left the cycleway by the descent to School Path and thence back home. About 6½-miles in exactly 2½-hours.

Please join us in April and note the later start time!
