Rambling - February 2005 Report 13th February. It felt like winter with the temperature hovering at 7°C. and a very strong wind from the west. However, there were moments of blue sky and sunshine as 27 walkers set off for our February walk. This was probably the largest February gathering that we have ever had! Our destination was South Moreton. We headed along Main Road to the Causeway and then along Fieldside to Grange Path which leads us to Blewbury Road. This route nicely avoids the dire pedestrian crossings at Lower Cross! A short stretch on Blewbury Road takes us to the diagonal path that begins at White's corner and takes us to the bridleway that runs from Shortlands Farm to Fulscot Farm. We followed the footpath through Fulscot Farm to the path that runs beside the road to South Moreton. To our great delight, we found that this path, which used to only run half the distance to South Moreton, has been extended all the way, courtesy of a new permissive path. In South Moreton we turned right on Church Lane and went to the church for a brief stop and a look at the ancient yew. Our route home was due west beside Mill Brook and then southwest to the Blewbury road. I had anticipated this turning to the west with some trepidation because the wind had been so strong on our backs as we walked east. However, we got lucky: as we made the turn the wind dropped away to almost nothing and the walk home was not the chore that I had feared. After only a few hundred yards on Blewbury Road, we were able to turn northwest on a footpath through a field of trees (identified by one walker as "cricket bat willows") across two streams and onto Moor Lane. Along Moor Lane to the second turning north and thence to Fieldside and finally our own Church Lane and then back to Upper Cross. We covered nearly 6 miles in about 2½ hours. An enjoyable walk on a challenging day. Please join us in March! Next Village Ramble:Sunday, March 13th - 1:30pm - Meet at East Hagbourne Upper Cross Contact John Jones 813326 |
