Rambling - January 2005 Report

January 9th. The weather started out overcast and windy, but soon showed its true colours with strong winds and real, live rain. Meanwhile, 23 of us headed out for new territory (for this group): Prospect Farm and Alden Farm, both south of Upton.

We headed to Upton via School Path and the new bike track (Dismantled Railway). We crossed the Reading Road and headed uphill on the Lynch Way which gives some attractive views towards Hagbourne Hill and Chilton. The intermittent rain turned quite persistent as we came to the entrance of Prospect Farm and we found a dilemma: The map indicated that the byway went straight through the farm; however, there were other signs (and thoughts) that the byway had been 'stopped up'. We erred on the side of caution and turned westward on a footpath that lead to Chilton. At the edge of Chilton we turned south to reach the green lane that would eventually allow us to reach Alden Farm. This was a two mile detour that we didn't need in the pouring rain!

The group were good sports and we soldiered on through Alden Farm (very attractive) and headed north-east to Upton Lodge and then home the quickest way possible: back on the Dismantled Railway and then onto School Lane. The whole adventure was about 7½ miles covered in 2½ hours. We were a weary and bedraggled lot when we returned, but we'd had the satisfaction of seeing some new territory!
