Rambling - December 2004 Report

December 12th. We've been living with a high pressure system that seemed to hang around for weeks. At least it was dry, although cool and a bit misty. Sixteen of us departed for points South.

Actually, standing around at Upper Cross waiting for the final people to arrive was pretty cold so we commenced our walking at a good clip. We traveled to Blewbury in the usual manner: south on Church Lane; west on Fieldside to the one through path that skirts the old BSW and runs south into the village. We continued along Westbrook Street to the Reading Road, and briefly east to pickup the footpath that runs beside the reservoir to Churn Hill. The views were quite unusual because of all the mist, but still very attractive.

From there, the way home is all downhill. Skirting Upper Chance Farm we came to Woodway Road which we followed briefly north to the footpath that runs down the hill, straight into Blewbury. Another short jog to the east and we picked up a footpath that I don't think that we have ever used. Not beautiful, but totally free of traffic. It ends at Berry Lane where another footpath runs more or less north toward East Hagbourne. In fact it intersects the Blewbury Road which we followed for a few hundred yards to pick up yet another path that we rarely use.

This seldom-used path veers off north-west from the road and eliminates a bit of road walking. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite make it to Fieldside so we put up with one more brief stretch of road walking. We followed Fieldside to The Causeway and Main Road to the church where many of us indulged in a very welcome Christmas tea.

The walk took a little more than 2½-hours and was about 7-miles in length. There will have been an informal walk on New Years Day, and our next regularly scheduled walk is on 9 January, at the usual wintertime start of 1:30. Hope to see you there!
