Hagbourne Book Group - Update January 2010
The original Hagbourne Book Group (also known as BG1) is now in its 14th year. We meet 11 times a year, with the January meeting being 'Readers' Choice, when we report
on our Christmas reading and choose most of the books for the rest of the year. Last year our favourite books were To Kill a Mockingbird (Harper Lee), The Vanishing
Act of Esme Lennox (Maggie O'Farrell), and A Thousand Splendid Suns (Khaled Hosseini).
In April several of us attended a convention for reading groups in Oxford, where we made the happy discovery that the Oxfordshire library has a list of about 270 books
that they will supply for reading groups in sets of 12. Our book list for 2010 contains five books from the library book list, as you can see:
February, The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, by Mary Ann Shaffer (Library set)
March, Sky Burial, by Xinran (Library set)
April, American Wife, by Curtis Sittenfeld
May, Pincher Martin, by William Golding
June, The Secret Scripture, by Sebastian Barry (Library set)
July, Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, by Stieg Larsson
September, Wolf Hall, by Hilary Mantel
October, The Immigrant, by Manju Kapur (Library set)
November, The Help, by Kathryn Stockett
December, An Equal Stillness, by Francesca Kay (Library set)
We meet on the first Monday of the month, but unfortunately we are too large to accept any new members at this time. However, BG 2 is open to new members, and we know
of several villagers who would like to start a Not on Mondays book group, so if you are interested, please get in touch.

BG2
Approaching our third anniversary, the "second Book Group", or BG2 for short, have just assembled our next reading list, which should keep us going for most of 2010 (see below).
If you like reading and discussing books in an informal atmosphere, without all the homework, then BG2 may be for you.
Our get-togethers are wide-ranging and entertaining and yet, in-depth and often passionate. We get 5 to 10 people along from a membership of around 15 who come and go, depending on
availability. We meet in each others homes from 8:00pm on the second Monday of each month. New members are always made very welcome. just moved to the village or just want to meet some
new people? Then please contact Doug Amos to join in.
Recent hits include . . . On Chesil Beach, The Outsider, To Kill a Mocking Bird, God of Small Things, Intimacy, The Great Gatsby, Steinbeck's Shorter novels and most
recently, our favourite children's books (great fun!). We arrive at our reading list by each nominating two books; one we've read and one we've been meaning to read.
By discussion we whittle down to an eclectic selection, such as our current list for 2010 . . .
January. "The Road" - Cormac McCarthy
February. "Mme Bovary" - Gustave Flaubert
March. "Watching the English" - Kate Fox
April. "Salmon Fishing in the Yemen" - Paul Torday
May. "The Jungle" - Upton Sinclair
June. "Fireworks" - Angela Carter
July. "Shadow of the Wind" - Carlos Ruiz Zafon
August. "The Woman in White" - Wilkie Collins
September "I'm not Scared" - Niccolo Ammaniti
October "The Catcher in the Rye" - J. D. Salinger
November "Ice Cold in Alex" - Christopher Landon
Do feel free to join in!
