Hagbourne Village Show 2004 If you had listened to the weather forecasts for the weekend of the show you could be forgiven for thinking that the best thing to do was get a good book and spend the weekend curled up by a roaring fire with copious amounts of piping hot tea. In contrast to the year before the summer had struggled to get going apart from the rather late but much appreciated blast of sunshine in early September. Fortunately this had not affected either the entrants or the people who join us for the village show. The show always provides people with a great opportunity to catch up with those people you have not managed to have a proper chat with recently or to meet the other people who live in our villages. This year's awards were given to the following people. The Blakes of Didcot award for fruit and vegetables went to Malcolm Brownsword, as did the cup for flowers. This included some particularly nice entries in the bonsai section of which the tri-colours of the Japanese Maple Acer pulmatum was my personal favourite. I have always admired bonsai trees but have never had the required discipline and patience to create these miniature marvels. For those of you who are interested in gardening Malcolm is always on the look out for new members and runs an excellent series of talks and events throughout the year at the Hagbourne Garden Club. For more details watch out for information on the local notice boards or give him a call on 850668. The last cup in this section went to one of our most popular winners Denise Horswell for the best flower arrangement. This year saw a particularly good range of beautiful entries in the craft section with Carole Leadbeater claiming the cup. In Home produce, preserves was won by Carole Hackett, and baking by Yvonne Brown. The Lawson's scooped, or should it be the Lawsons' chickens, the eggcup. I have always thought that the judges have a difficult task judging the baking section and this year was no exception with the judges having to taste a wide variety of delicious home made produce. It's a good job there is only one show a year so that they will have time to diet ready for next years tasting challenge! The Emery award for artistic endeavour went to Joan Bunting, with the Hollis award going to Jennifer Duffin for the best individual child entry. The Kenyon award for the best newcomer went to Simon Stevenson. Simon was not the only newcomer this year, from a personal point of view it is always great to have new people getting involved. Interestingly enough no entries this year in the home brewed wine and beer classes. Has everybody stopped brewing or are they drinking it all themselves? I am tempted to dust off my demijohns ready for next year. So that is it for another year and nearly all that is left to do is to encourage as many of you as possible to join us for next years show. Finally, it would be rude of me not to thank everyone who made this years show possible, especially that stalwart bunch of individuals who make up the village show committee.
