EAST HAGBOURNE PLAYGROUND

Full details are posted elsewhere in the magazine but we are very pleased to announce that the Village is about to start the construction of a new Playground in the Recreation Ground off Great Mead. Funding has been obtained from SODC & TOE to supplement funds from EHPC and the Monica Lawson Memorial Fund. We are aiming to have the new Playground open by the end of this October.

LATEST FLOOD NEWS

Mid-day on the Britain in Bloom judging saw a very heavy downpour of rain - around 40mm fell in just half an hour and heavy showers continued through the afternoon. There was flash flooding on Main Road and Blewbury Road, but we are not aware that any houses were flooded. The stream coped well with the flow, but water lay on the roads for some time highlighting that there are several blocked drains. Oxfordshire County Council has undertaken to carry out a cleansing and camera survey of the road drainage through the village, and this should take place in the next few weeks.

CALOR OXFORDSHIRE VILLAGES OF THE YEAR COMPETITION

Judging took place in Yarnton on 4th July 2009. Goring won the main prize but the Village won the South Oxfordshire District Prize and will now receive £500 to spend on Village amenities. The judges were particularly taken by the Village shop, local waterway clearance, the eco school flag and the Britain in Bloom effort.

BRITAIN IN BLOOM COMPETITION

Well done everyone. We have not had the results yet, but the feeling is that all the hard work and preparations for Britain in Bloom came together very well. As part of this a stunning video and attractive portfolio about the Village, showing our activities throughout the year, were prepared and submitted to the Competition Organizers before the visit by the two judges on Thursday 6th August. In their comments to the Didcot Herald reporter (August 12th issue) at the end of their visit, the judges said that they had had a lovely time and were clearly impressed with the way that the Village had worked together. For the actual judging, we were very lucky to have blue sky and sunshine. By contrast, shortly after the judges left, the heavens opened and our roads were turned into rivers.
Monica Lawson did so much towards gaining the awards that the Village received in previous years, leading to our qualification for the National Finals. The work by so many villagers to get the Village ready for the judging this year has been a very fitting tribute to her. This has given Britain in Bloom a special significance and has also been a reminder of all the work she did quietly around the Village for so many years.
